Planning: Thursday is the New Saturday

Just a little note from the planner.

Brides/Grooms and wedding’s on a whole have taken on an entirely new life. They have evolved since the days our grandparents exchanged vows and will continue to do so. With this in mind, I want you savvy couples just beginning to get your planning underway to remember one thing ” if you book it…they will come”.

What this means is, YOU are planning your wedding based on your needs, your desires, your likes, your BUDGET. And with those factors in mind do not be suckered into feeling that you HAVE to get married on a Saturday evening at The Plaza because that is what you “think” your guests will expect. Your guests ( if they truly love, care and wish to celebrate you) will go to a wedding on a Sunday evening, or a Saturday morning, or a Thursday. Wherever your purse strings carry you. Lead with what you want most in your wedding day. Choose your venue based on what matters to you both the most. And if you feel that your desires are waaaaaay out of your budget at the venue of your dreams, don’t forget to ask the Sales manager if you can have the wedding there on a Tuesday or a Sunday or a Thursday. You will be amazed at what suddenly becomes affordable when you become a bit more flexible.

PS: If anyone complains about your “flexible” date, I would seriously consider re-evaluating your relationship with that guest. #JustSayin

Parties: A Bollywood Destination Wedding In Jamaica

As a planner you often get lost in the hustle of the wedding day that you often miss some of the most important parts of the wedding.

  • The look on the brides face as the door to the chapel opens.
  • The smile on the littlest faces when they see a real life princess. 
  • The guests speculating on the style of the gown “she” is wearing. “I hear it’s a long slinky sexy gown with small details making it very very chic…you know that is her style”. “Well knowing her she is in a huge ballgown with bling EVERYWHERE”
  • The groom strut and high five all his “boys” when he gets his time to shine. 
  • The guests as they shift and squirm in their seat anxiously waiting and asking “is she here yet, is she hear yet?

So lucky me I had the opportunity to witness all the beauty and the excitement as a guest of a Bollywood style wedding in Ocho Rios Jamaica (Ochie for us yardies). The ceremony took place at Our Lady of Fatima Roman Catholic Church in Ochie while the reception was held at the Golden Cove Resort in Boscobel. I loved that the couple was not shy on showcasing their own culture complimented by the islands culture throughout the entire evening. Tassa band from Clarendon, Jamaica, Bollywood attire  in every brite and vibrant hue in the rainbow (I would show you mine but ahhhm..let’s just say NO), pan chicken, reggae, soca and a little bit of everything else to get guests moving on the custom dancefloor.  But the absolute highlight of the evening was taking in the love shared intimately between these two; Candace the Candy Coated Cutie and Jules The Roman, along with their closest family and friends. It was a memorable occasion and I am glad I was able to witness it…as a guest:)

Planning: It’s a Destination Mon!

Recently, one of my girlfriends said “St. Lucia is the #1 country for Destination Weddings”. STOP THE PRESS…WHAAAAT!!!!! (remember she’s a Lucian talking to a Jamaican so of course I disagree…biased yes I know). I asked her where she saw that little tidbit. She told me everywhere.  I visited St. Lucia for the first time this year and LOVED IT! So much so I tried to “convince” a 2014 destination couple to get married there, but I lost that battle. But #1 island for destination weddings? Hmmmmm, this I have to investigate.

So I spent a few hours on Sunday…like a lot of few hours…perusing the Internet looking for this magical “everyone” person that my friend was talking about. And what I found did not shock me one bit. Every site I checked, every expert that spoke, every frequent traveler that had something to say had a different answer.  Which leaves me to believe, the #1 country for a Destination weddings is…(drum roll please)

Wherever You Damn Well Choose To Get Married!!!! 

What works for you will NOT work for everyone else. What appeals to him, may NEVER appeal to her. So worry less about the #1, #2 or #3 choice and choose what best suits your needs. I am not saying don’t entertain the “experts”. But take from it what you will. Make your decisions based on what you and your fiancée want most out of the occasion and location.

BUT! just in case you wanted my “EXPERT” advice… go ahead I dare you to roll your eyes at expert, here are some of my faves:

Tobago:
I am a frequent traveler to Trinidad (every year for the past 7 years for Carnival) but 2013 was the first time visiting Trinidad’s sister island, Tobago. I FELL IN LOVE… ahhhhhhhh. The beauty of the island, the warmth of the people and the SEA.  Perfect place for a beach front wedding.

Barbados:
This small but beautiful island captured my heart 4 years ago and it hasn’t let go since. Small in size but LARGE in beauty. The sea here is STELLAR STELLAR STELLAR! In comparison to some of the islands I’ve visited I find Barbados to be more modern than most without losing it’s island vibes and cultural appeal. I just love this place.

Anguilla:
I have never been to Anguilla (YET) but recently while researching destinations I fell in love with the possibilities of potentially getting lost on this island. Something about this island appeals to me.

Take a look at The Viceroy which has quickly been added to my bucket list.

St. Lucia:
As I mentioned before I visited for the first time this year and was extremely pleased. I love a hilly island with beautiful scenery and lush land. And St. Lucia fits the bill.  A beautiful island get-away. This location will be specifically exciting for your guests as there are sooooo many things to do in St. Lucia. So if you choose this option make sure your guests stay for an extra couple of days ( or 3).

Jamaica (oh island in the sun):
My home, my land, the country of my birth. I LOVE MY COUNTRY and you will too. The Land, The Sea, The Air. The People, The Places & The Things. Also another great destination for you to turn your wedding DAY into a wedding weekend extravaganza. The lush landscape and the calming sea make this a toss up for me. Is it it best for an ocean side wedding, or something secluded up in the hills. Either choice is the right choice. You can’t go wrong. Fill up on fruits and seafood, eat jerk EVERYTHING, and enjoy the sweet sounds of reggae music. Have I rambled enough?

Because I am so close to this island I have so many choices for venue options but to throw just a few out at you try The Rockhouse Hotel Strawberry Hill , Trident Port Antonio, and Geejam Hotel. Thank me later (with some juneplums)

Parties: Team Tadjerie…Love on The Mainline

This was no ordinary Saturday in July. This particular Saturday… July 28, 2012 (yes I’m a bit late) was the day that Tadj Cazaubon & Valerie Delgado was set to exchange vows in a garden ceremony followed by a cocktail hour and semi-formal reception. Well, mother nature had other plans so we had to move our outdoor wedding indoors. But that did NOT damper any of the days activities. There were tears, smiles, jitters, laughs, LOVE, wardrobe malfunctions, dancing and a never ending parade of a whole lot of fun.

Val andTadj, (Team Tadjerie), spent a little over a year working very closely with me to design the perfect wedding for them. He from St. Lucia , her from Trinidad, both wanting to make sure the wedding was a true reflection of him – cool as ice, her – hot like fire, him – old school reggae, her – fast paced soca and dancehall. Together we developed a fun event that showcased their love for each other and their desire to have a darn good time!

Planning: The Striped Effect

My latest obsession = BOLD Black and white stripes.

What do I love about it?

  1. It’s VERY eye catching
  2. You can add any color with it and it accents it VERY well
  3. A little bit of stripes goes a long way and still makes an impact
  4. It’s magic… put it on (an object) and immediately adds length and width  (not always a positive when it comes to horizontal striped clothing though)
  5. Did I mention it is VERY eye catching

So what do you think? Too much for you or right up your alley? I will admit… it’s ALLOT, and not for the faint at heart. But as I mentioned before, if you love bold stripes but your not ready to fully commit, see #3 above: “a little bit of stripes goes a long way”.  If you feel like it might be for you, here are some ways to consider infusing this awesomely amazingly beautiful design into your wedding, for the Bold AND the Bashful

  • Bold: Use a striped table cover… Bashful: Use a solid color table cover with a black and white striped linen runner
  • Bold: Wear a broad striped belt with a striped ribbon flower fascinator…Bashful: Wrap your bouquet with striped ribbon
  • Bold: Drape the ceiling of your reception tent with black and white fabric…Bashful: Use a striped dinner napkin and let it hang over the side of the table but under your charger
  • Bold: Add stripes to your outdoor ceremony by alternating black and white lawn or chiavari chairs…Bashful: Have your stationary designer add a subtle stripe to the ceremony program and leave one on alternating chairs
  • Bold: Striped bow or neck ties…Bashful: Striped cuff links
  • Bold: Striped flower girl dress (solid on the top and striped from the waist down)…Bashful: Striped ponytail ribbon 

It’s your wedding, do it how you want to. Either stand waaaaay out or stand out a little, but whatever you do…STAND OUT!

Your wedding day is fast approaching and isn’t it cute to celebrate going from Mr. & Ms to Mr. & Mrs. than to personalize little details showcasing that you have now crossed over into Mrs.’dom.

Planning: The Outdoor Wedding

The weather is warming up and more and more wedding ceremonies are moving outdoors. GREAT! But as the weather heats up so will your guests, so keep them comfortable and consider adding one or two of these to help shield the sunshine:

  • Sunglasses: Especially if you don’t mind the cool factor
  • Fans: Unless your ceremony program doubles as a fan, give your guest some fans to help keep them cool and breezy. There are so many fan options so I am sure you can find one to compliment that style and colors of your wedding
  • Draping: You can still keep your ceremony outdoorsy and still block some of the sun with light organza draping. it’s also keeps your ceremony space feeling intimate but NOT small
  • Parasols: Too big a parasol could be distracting to your other guests but at the right size it could provide allot of shade (and they are too cute)
  • Plan Ahead: The hottest times of the day is usually around 3pm. So plan your outdoor ceremony earlier in the day before the sun begins to peak and is at it’s warmest, or later when it is on it’s way to cool down mode.
  • Communicate: Either word of mouth, on your wedding website or carefully worded on your invite, let your guests know that your ceremony will be outdoors. This way your guests will arrive knowing they will be in the sunshine and will dress accordingly. 
  • Bottle Water: Take it one step further and personalize them with your logo, picture or a fun message

Sure your ceremony may be short but 20 minutes can feel like 20 hours if you are hot and uncomfortable. And remember…your guests aren’t the only ones baking in the sun YOU are too. Considering the style and weight of your bridal gown, you may be more uncomfortable than they are.  So plan ahead and make it easier on you and your guests.

Pretty Little Things: Blooming Beauties

It’s spring time in New York, and aside from the weather being completely bipolar it is a great time for some pretty blooms. And because of this bipolar weather ( I’m not complaining) we are starting to see some of our favorite blooms peak earlier than usual. What I am mainly referring to are Cherry Blossoms. Typically we see the heights of these flowery beauties in mid April -May. BUT here we are in March and they are popping up all over the place and completely blanketing homeowners lawns.

Because of the color and fullness they are a favorite of mine for springtime weddings. Here’s why

I love that in a centerpiece it gives you a feel of having an outdoor wedding indoors. And let’s not stop there, cherry blossoms are great for your stationary, cakes as well as favors. So feel free to spread the spring time love throughout your wedding.

I see these cute little items (that you can also find in different color adornments) lining the aisle in an outdoor ceremony or as decor for a window panes for those venues with large windows
